I wrote a bit about this in my review of the Royal Canin kitten food and decided to come back and write a review on the elder food as well since it has been such a change for my old girl. After about 1.5 months of eating Royal Canin she has gone from an old, crotchety grandma cat to a romping and playful kitty with an absolutely beautiful coat. She SHINES both in her attitude and her fur. In addition, for years we have worked with veterinarians due to what we believed to be either a skin condition or allergy. After 4 vets, countless brands/attempts at a real food diet (very difficult to maintain for our household) and a kitty lifetime, we still weren’t sure what exactly was causing her the itchiness and sores. Well, after using this food paired with a high protein kibble for snacks.. her sores are now almost completely gone and she’s no longer scratching all the time. I feel terrible it took us so long to find the answer for her, but I’m glad we did and thank Royal Canin that my cat finally feels comfortable in her own skin.

Nothing to dislike. Wonderful food. My male wasn’t eating much and then I gave him this food and now he eats twice as much as he did!
My girl gulps it down and asks for more.
Wonderful product!!!! 100 stars!

My cat has been eating Royal Canin for more than a year now after I was told I needed to reduce the amount of phosphorus in his food. Previously he preferred dry food which isn’t so great apparently for cat kidneys. I started experimenting with the lowest phosphorus canned foods and worked my way through the list until we got to Royal Canin 12+. He loves it. He seems to love the taste and cleans his bowl. I usually top off the can with water before I feed him and it makes a little more gravy. The food has a thick gravy but the can is packed full of mostly food unlike cheaper foods which are mostly gravy with bits of food in it. From my research, this food has 159 mg phosphorus per 100 kcal which is one of the lowest you can find without going to a veterinary diet. I also like it because it has a good amount of protein and a moderate amount of fat and carbohydrates. Switching from dry to canned seemed difficult until we tried this. He switched easily with minimal complaints. The food is obviously more expensive than a lot of foods out there, but there is very little waste. I used to throw out a lot of uneaten cat food before. Not with this food. He cleans his bowl almost always. It also contains glucosamine for joint health which is great. If you’ve ever tried to feed the powdered glucosamine to a cat then you know how much they like that. I totally recommend this food. It’s more expensive but then again, it’s a lot cheaper than a veterinary formula. He’s been doing great on this food and in more than a year hasn’t become bored with it at all. Since being on this food he’s stopped throwing up all the time and has stopped crying when he goes to the litter box.
Update – After a long and happy relationship of ease and convenience with this cat food my cat sadly suddenly stopped eating it … right after I got a shipment of four non-returnable cases. I think they’ve changed the recipe because he’s eating the other low phosphorus cat foods I picked up at the store like a champ. If you’re looking for a simple way of getting accurate nutrition info on wet cat food just do a web search for cat food phosphorus index. It’s the cat info org site. There’s a vet out there who has compiled an exhaustive list that includes protein, carbs and fat. Super helpful. Good luck!

I like the convenience of the pouches. My cat can get 2 meals from 1 pouch. He likes the flavor and moistness of the food.

My senior absolutely loves this food. She recently turned 12 last month, she was 9 when I adopted her. She is by far the pickiest eater I’ve encountered thus far. At first I was feeding her Sheba as it was the only wet food she would touch and is a step up from friskies, which was given to her when she was in the shelter. From there it’s been trial and error, she has severe allergies, stomatitis, and no teeth. Our veterinarian recommend the prescription hills science diet but I wasn’t trying to dish out $70 on a 12 pack of food that she most likely won’t touch. She did also mention the royal canine for sensitive digestive systems so I ended up going and picking up a few different cans to “test” her on and this is the only one she’ll touch. Her skin and fur feel and look great. She’s also managed to put on some actual weight within the small period of time that she’s been eating this food. She’s already of small stature but she was 7.5lbs when I adopted her and I’ve only managed to get her up to 9.0lbs but she’s been at a steady 8-8.8lbs for a few months. I can definitely tell that she’s gaining some weight, not a drastic amount but enough to where she actually looks healthy and well fed. I did read that Sheba was actually taken off the shelves at petco because it lacks in nutritional value that’s recommended for healthy cats so it could also be that she wasn’t receiving the proper about of nutrients. Who knows… I’m just glad we found something that we both like, she looks great and seems as though she feels great and she loves the taste. That’s a win win in my book.

Sooty took up residency at my barn and chirps when she sees me coming. She tried to purr, but it is a silent purr. How do I know she is purring, you might ask? I can feel it when I hold her. Anyway, one day she stopped eating. Royal Canin for aging cats caught my attention and I read the reviews. She had started to lose weight and when I started feeding this to her, she started eating again. Small amounts at first.
Now, she is doing quite well. I mix this food with a dry and she is guarding my barn again against dragons and fierce creatures. We continue to sit on the petting bale of hay and listen to the horses chew their hay and nicker for more. Sooty rides my hay buggy to put the hay out. She oversees the entire operation and looks out for me and the horses. Sooty and I needed each other and she now has her permanent home.
Can’t say enough about this cat food. I had tired others, but this was the only one she seemed to like. Thank you Royal Canin cat food for aging cats. And, thank you North Vibe 313 who is the seller.

She was throwing up a lot and this really cut down on that. Also is within the phosphorus level vet recommended for cats with kidney disease.
